Big farewell: Who is the iconic deceased lion "Scarface" in the Kenyan Mara?

At the age of 14, Scarface, the oldest lion in Kenyan Mara who was known by a scar across his eye breathed his last. It was reported to have died of natural causes, according to the World Heritage Species.


Here, follows some facts about the legendary lion that is loved and discussed passionately by wildlife enthusiasts:


  • It suffered few injuries throughout its life period that led to developing a few limps. However, the lion was strong enough till death aged 14.

  • In 2016, it was among the pride of lions, “the four musketeers” who took over the paradise pride



  • Alongside its brothers, Scarface dominated the Ashnil and Malaika camp territories

  • It was known for long sleeping hours

  • It was always seen with its brothers, Sikio and Morani. Their other brother passed away three years ago

  • Scarface once escaped death after being speared by a Maasai herderl

  • For the last 4 years, has been seen limping as he was getting old and his old injuries catching up with him, according to the co-owner of Matira bush camp




It’s worth mentioning that Scarface's death came days after a scared lion in Maasai Mara went viral for being scared buffalos.


The announcement of the departure of Scarface caused great sadness among nature and animal lovers. The World Heritage Animal Rights Organization, published a picture of the burial of the “King of Mara,” wrote: “Good evening, Scarface. Rest in peace, noble warrior.”




According to African wildlife photographer Randall Paul, the famous cat “was and always will be a legend. He will be remembered around the world as one of the most famous lions of the Masai Mara. He and his brothers controlled Mara during his reign.” Paul added on Facebook: “People came to Mara just to see him and he was definitely one of the most photographed lions in the world.”
