Egyptian father adapts European marriage requirements for his daughter

“Whoever is trusted with one's honour cannot be asked for money.. Take good care of our daughter” Simple sentence and huge gesture had everyone talking on social media, an Egyptian father who refused to agree on a list of movables and wrote this sentence instead.

“A woman’s right is not preserved by a list, but it is ensured by choosing the right partner who will cherish her”, said Nasser Makhlouf, from Dakahlia governorate, father of the bride, said to “Trendify”.

Makhlouf pointed out that culturally Egyptians are used to writing this list, and the fact that he decided not to write one, created a hassle on social media that shows the existence of an issue in the society.

Makhlouf’s daughter was not on board at first and believed that it is an important insurance for any possible future issues, however, he convinced her with the concept. He did not fear doing this even though “no court would bring her rights”, but it is a matter of trust with who is marrying his daughter.

“When I got married, I was asked to agree on this list”, said Makhlouf, married for 25 years, and added that neither he nor his wife even know what is on this list.

Makhlouf added that they couldn’t ask a fresh university graduate, who could have also recently finished his military service, to start a home and ask him of almost impossible requirements immediately. They understand that these days the youth is struggling and that it is not easy for them to have it all.

After travelling to Europe, Makhlouf noticed that foreigners lead a simple life, they get married with what they already have, such as a studio apartment and simple furniture. Once they have children, only then do they look for more. He added that “this is something to implement as Egyptians, we do not need to have everything settled at once”.

“We’ve been together since we were kids, we’re childhood sweethearts” said the groom. The story began when Mariam Makhlouf and Mohamed Ali decided to get married.

“He looked at me, smiled and said ‘how much would you sign for’, to which I replied ‘all the treasures of the world would not be enough for Mariam”, said the groom, Mohamed Ali.

Ali added that he was surprised with what his future father-in-law wrote on the list’s paper. Ali’s father said that they had to agree on a list for his daughter, but the father insisted that this is how he would prefer and that he knows that the person who is marrying his daughter is genuine.

“If I were in his place, it would still depend on who the person marrying my daughter is,” said Ali. He added that he agrees on the suggestion that parents should go easy on those about to get married at a young age and are still starting their journey in life.
