A picture of two boys sleeping on stairs in a family court in Alexandria spread on social media, fueling the debate on divorce and marriage. People sympathized with the children and a sense of sorrow propagated among Egyptians. Who took this image and what does it signify?
“I uploaded this picture as an icon that resembles many dimensions of this issue in our society,” said Layaly Tayel to “Trendify”, a lawyer at a family court, who posted the picture on her personal Facebook account, and added that she did not know who these children were or what their story was.
“We see much more difficult cases in court, these two boys are considered somehow better than most,” said Tayel, “whoever enters this building, gets hurt someway or another.”
Ms. Layaly added that as lawyers, they are met with similar cases almost daily, “we will continue to encounter these issues if the law remains unchanged regarding its slow and ineffective processing of family cases”.
“It became a trend on social media as it spread a sense of sorrow, many people relate to it. Some either lived this brokenness and helplessness as children, put themselves in their shoes, or feared their future would turn out the same,” said Tayel.
In addition, it spread during the same time a picture of a ‘Marriage List of Movables’ spread where a father wrote that “whoever is trusted with a person’s life, should not be asked for money”, implying that he trusts the person marrying his daughter to cherish her and never let it get to the point of divorce.
“These two pictures brought two concepts into one perspective,” said Tayel.
Tayel added that ‘bad spouses’ make use of the family court’s slow and inefficient processes to their personal advantage, resulting in direct or indirect harm of any children involved, “the main issue lies in the poor litigation procedures in family law and its slow implementation”.
