Hussam El-Turkii - Physiotherapist and member of the medical committee of the Egyptian Gymnastics Federation

Cairo International Stadium witnessed an impressive opening ceremony for the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup, yesterday, hosted by Egypt during the period from 3 to 7 June, on the indoor hall complex at Cairo International Stadium.

El-Turkii: For a month, we provided players with two recovery sessions daily during their training and afterwards in the hotel

Hussam El-Turkii, Physiotherapist and member of the medical committee of the Egyptian Gymnastics Federation, said the Egyptian players started physical preparation for the world cup a month ago where the physical problems of each player were addressed and worked on by the whole team. “We provided players with two recovery sessions daily during their training and afterwards in the hotel”.

“As from the beginning of the tournament, The medical team of the Egyptian Federation is committed to provide medical aid and support to both Egyptian and non-Egyptian players'', El-Turkii added. The medical team is committed to provide support to all teams like it was done with a Trukish player whose finger was injured yesterday. However, the Egyptian players are prioritized.

El-Turkii: El-Araby's injury is not severe but he may not be able to complete the tournament in order to recover easily before the Olympics

El-Turkii added to “Trendify” that the Egyptian player Omar El-Araby, who was recently qualified to represent Egypt in the next Olympic cycle, was injured Yesterday. El-Araby was injured as he fell from the Parallel Bars after his foot slipped. “The injury of the Egyptian player is not severe but he may not be able to complete his participation in the tournament in order to recover easily before the Olympics”.

“Usually when a player gets injured in such tournaments, he/she doesn’t become able to continue the tournament due to its limited duration that may not allow for a speedy recovery”, El Turkii said. In some cases, players are allowed to continue playing if their games don't involve full body movement. For instance, if a player got a leg injury, and they play horizontal bar or ring, he/she can be allowed to play with a medical report that includes an explanation of their case so that the technical committee acknowledges the injury. On the other hand, in floor exercise that involves full body movement, players shouldn’t be allowed to play after injury.

Tournament's medical team

The least common injuries in such tournaments are the shoulder injuries. However, everything else is expected such as the cruciate ligament, cartilage and vertebrae injuries, according to El-Turkii.

El-Turkii mentioned that in order for players to maintain their body fitness during the tournament, they should follow the instructions given by the medical team that include sleeping well, drinking plenty of water and caffeine reduction in order for the nervous system to stay relaxed.

El-Turkii: Ali Zahran is the most fit and promising player in the tournament

As per the most fit player with expectations to win the Gold medal, El-Turkii said Ali Zahran, who smoothly qualified for the finals, could be considered the most fit and promising player in the tournament.

The medical committee of the Egyptian Federation is led by Dr Ahmed Mosaad, surgeon, and includes physiotherapists and nurses in addition to the 30-doctor team sent by the ministry of Health in order for COVID-19 precautionary measures to be taken.
