Mariam Metwally: Winning volleyball Egypt cup was expected, I dream of international professionalism

Al Ahly women volleyball team managed to secure Egypt’s cup for volleyball, yesterday, after they managed to defeat their rivals from the Shooting club 3-2 after victory in the deciding 5th set.

Mariam Metwally, Al-Ahly volleyball player, said the shooting club team is a skillful one that kept improving over time and showed a challenging performance yesterday. “In the 3rd and 4th sets, we tended to lose focus so the shooting club surpassed us. However, by the 5th set, we regained our focus and managed to make an impressive return to bring victory to the red shirt”.

Mariam added to “Trendify” that the main challenges in the Egypt’s Cup final match were the loss of focus and exhaustion because of the long season where the red team had to train for a long time without taking enough rest. “We have just returned from the semifinals in Alexandria, but all these we managed to overcome all hardships and challenges”.

Metwally: Achieving the domestic double was expected

“Achieving the domestic double in volleyball after winning the league title in May was expected,” Metwally mentioned. Although Metwally won 7 cups with Al Ahly, this one was different where securing the cup this time was “like grabbing it from the lion’s mouth” as the team was about to lose when they managed to secure the cup.

For 6 years, Captain Hamdy Al-Safy, the technical director of women's volleyball team at Al Ahly, managed to not only secure the red team’s position in the top but become a friend and older brother who provides support and encouragement to all the team members, according to Metwally.

Metwally: I dream of professionalism in an international club

“I dream of professionalism and playing in an International club although I can’t imagine leaving Al Ahly” Metwally said in a description of her future goals. “I also look forward for Al Ahly winning the African league since we didn’t participate this year”.

Despite the fact that no indoor volleyball Egyptian team qualified for the Olympics, Metwally said “we are looking forward to the participation of the Egyptian beach volleyball team with hopes that they bring top medals' '.
