Males interest in cosmetics and plastic surgeries, between dermatology's confirmation and men denial

Summer breaks and holidays could be considered as dermatology’s high season where people would try to focus on appearance in a good shape in a way they would be satisfied with. For so long, the common perception, when terms like “Cosmetics” or “Plastic surgeries” were mentioned, was that these are “women things”. However, males in Egypt started to show up as active customers of this industry with the debate ongoing about the extent of society’s acceptance of it.

According to Dr. Amin Amer, Dermatologist and specialist in cosmetics and laser, men paying visits to dermatologists could be quite normal since some suffer from skin or genital problems. “When it comes to plastic surgeries or cosmetic interventions, women would be the major interest group. However, men started to show an unprecedented increase of interest over the past few years”.

Amer: male clients would go for botox injections some would have active wrinkles that might result from the facial muscle movements

In cosmetics, most male clients would go for botox injections because in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes, some would have active wrinkles that might result from the facial muscle movements, Amer illustrated. “Interest in botox injections is because of fear of the potential results in case these wrinkles were left for so long they could turn into static ones”.

Filler would represent another major interest for male patients, Amer said. As humans age the percentage of existence of face acids like hyaluronic acid would decrease gradually and, consequently, the face will tend to “go down in direction of gravity”. So, injectable filler to cheeks would help retrieve the natural look back and add some volume.

Amer said to “Trendify” that males’ care about their appearance and skin not only reflected on the medical intervention but also their daily routine where the portion of men who started to apply sunscreen on daily basis and specialized anti-aging creams increased more than before in order to preserve a younger look for as long as possible”.

Amer: The interest in cosmetics and plastic surgeries would increase on holidays like Christmas and summer time

The interest in cosmetics and plastic surgeries would increase on holidays like Christmas and summer time, Amer said. The times of annual events, celebrations and entertainment could be classified as dermatology “high season”.

In a poll “Trendify” conducted on some Egyptian men, the results revealed that 95% of men disagreed on going for cosmetic injections or plastic surgeries in case they needed it. However, only 5% agreed to go for such type of injection only under condition of health issues that require such intervention.

In a parallel poll conducted on Egyptian women who were asked about whether they positively or negatively perceive men undergoing plastic surgeries or cosmetic interventions, the majority said “positive” as they regard it as a personal matter. However, the least portion of responses illustrated that some kinds of surgeries like eyebrow lifting when underwent by males would look provocative to some extent and may affect their interaction with this person.
